What's your real Bluesky engagement rate?
Engagement rate is the share of your followers who react to a typical post — likes, reposts and replies divided by follower count. Most calculators ask you to type in your own averages and then divide, which turns one viral post into a permanently flattering number. This one reads your last 300 public Bluesky posts from Bluesky's open API and reports the median post, plus the spread, so you can see what a typical post actually does rather than what your best one did. How this is calculated
For every post: likes plus reposts plus replies, divided by your follower count. That gives one rate per post. The headline number is the median of those rates — the middle post, the typical one.
The average is shown next to it because the two disagree more often than people expect. If a single post reaches well beyond your followers, it lifts your average permanently, and every ordinary post afterwards looks like a decline against a number one post created. When the average runs more than half again ahead of the median, this page says so explicitly rather than letting the bigger number stand unexplained.
Reposts and replies by you are excluded — a repost carries someone else's post, and a reply engages a different audience. Posts newer than 48 hours are excluded too, because they are still collecting engagement and counting them measures how recent a post is rather than how well it did. Up to 300 recent posts are read.
What counts as a good rate
It depends on how many followers you have, because the rate falls as an audience grows: a small account's followers are mostly people who know it, a large one's are not. So we measured it. On 2026-09-27 we sampled 2,000 active English-language accounts from Bluesky's public firehose as they posted, and ran this tool on each. 1,524 had 50–100,000 followers and enough settled posts to measure.
| Followers | Typical account | Middle half | Accounts |
|---|---|---|---|
| 50–499 | 0.64% | 0% – 1.69% | 504 |
| 500–1,999 | 0.30% | 0.09% – 0.76% | 536 |
| 2,000–9,999 | 0.11% | 0.04% – 0.33% | 369 |
| 10,000–100,000 | 0.03% | 0.01% – 0.13% | 115 |
Each account's rate is its median post, measured exactly as above: original posts only, at least 48 hours old, at least 20 of them. The sample is of people who post often, so occasional posters may differ, and at least a quarter of small accounts had a median of zero — most of their posts got no engagement at all.
The other comparison worth making is against yourself. Run this now, note the median, and run it again in a month. A rate that holds steady while your follower count grows means your reach is growing with it — which is the thing most people are actually asking about.
Timing is the other half of the question — find out when your posts do best.
Common questions
- How is Bluesky engagement rate calculated?
- Likes, reposts and replies on a post, divided by the account's follower count, expressed as a percentage. This page computes that for every one of your recent posts and reports the median — the typical post — rather than the average, which one unusually successful post can lift for good.
- What is a good engagement rate on Bluesky?
- It depends on account size, because the rate falls as an audience grows. We measured 1,524 active Bluesky accounts: the typical median post earned 0.64% for accounts with 50–499 followers and 0.03% for 10,000–100,000. Landing in your size band's middle half is normal. The most useful comparison is still against your own past: run this again in a month and see which way it moved.
- Why does this show a median instead of an average?
- Because an average is the wrong summary of a skewed distribution. If one post reaches far beyond your followers, it raises your average permanently, and every future post looks like a decline against a number a single post created. The median describes what a typical post actually does. Both are shown, and when they disagree by more than half again, the page says which posts are carrying the difference.
- Does this need my Bluesky password?
- No — and it never will. Everything here comes from Bluesky's public API, which needs no authentication, and the request is made by your own browser rather than by our servers. There is no login, no OAuth and no app password. Nothing about your account is stored.
- Why are my most recent posts not included?
- Posts less than 48 hours old are excluded because they are still collecting engagement. Counting them would mix in how recent a post is with how well it did, and would drag the median down for anyone who posts often. Only posts old enough to have settled are measured.
